I have a German last name as well. But my Mother's side has been here since the 1600s. Most Americans don't view American/Anglo-American as an ethnicity and take the nearest European as an identity. Even I said I was German American until I did some family history.

Thats pretty old. my family on both sides moved to America in the late 1800's so its pretty easy to track my origins. German and Scottish on my mom's side and Polish and Maltese on my Dad's.

True. There's a lot of towns with French names in Wisconsin, especially in the northern half. Mostly from fur trading outposts. I think the French had a lot to do with early logging in Wisconsin, as well. The Germans mostly settled in the southern parts and took up industry and farming. Lots of Norwegians farmers and Cornish miners, too, especially in the southwest part. If it wasn't for Madison, Killwaukee and Green Bay, this place would be so white it would make Newt Gingrich look like a member of the Wu-Tang Clan.
