The rise and fall of our power can be tracked with the ascent and decline of fidget spinners on a month-by-month basis.

Something like this is simply a side effect of the magick. Just as a high fantasy fire spell, as an example to illustrate, may be directed at a person but the surrounding area gets scorched as a result.
