vs. 23,500 deportations and 16,000 “voluntary” returns, a massive decline to previous years when up to 100,000 people were made to leave.

Spain will definitely become the obvious bad guy once the 2019 numbers are released. Since Salvini closed the Italian mediterranean smuggler route in summer 2018, the Spanish arrivals numbers shot up.
In this month so far, Spain had more than two times the arrivals of Italy and Greece combined. It takes the illegals a few weeks or months to travel through Europe, but after that little lag they will mostly show up in Germany because here they can collect maximum gibs.

The Italian route was never a big issue for Germany due to the composition of the migrants on the boats - they go to other target countries. Same with Spain.

Absolutely fake news. The UNHCR can and is only counting people actually detected, apprehended and registered. The only people registered are those who are picked up on the seas before the Greek islands, in the Med or off the coast of Spain. Plus a few people who came to the Spanish North African enclaves. People who come through the land border from Turkey to Bulgaria/Greece are not counted, because they aren’t apprehended, even though it is above 400,000 (compared to a few ten thousand in Spain, Italy and Greece).
You can easily see this from pic related, in the past 12 months the EU had 600,000 asylum claims. If you look at the numbers and nationalities registered in Spain, Italy and Greek islands by the UNHCR you can see clearly that over 80% must come through “somewhere else”. And no, it isn’t the case that they all come in via family reunification, visas etc.

"Family reunification" and legal visa travel doesn't count as applying for asylum anyway, so these people always get on top.

To be fair there is a substabtial number of people who come in via visas and then apply for asylum... Iranians to Serbia (30,000), Georgians, South Americans, Indians etc.
