They have the potential to become a non-Islamic state. A secular republic like Syria. The vast majority of young people hate Islamic rule. They might still identify as muslims but they don't want an Islamic country. They need time and better economic fortune for that to happen organically. Sanctions and hostility only strengthens the mullahs' hold on society. While economic woes continue, people can only struggle with the day-to-day instead of thinking ahead and thinking big.

Even current mullah-run Iran is not a physical threat or an ideological threat to us. I see no good reason why we shouldn't make peace with them (the nuclear deal being a very good first step in that path).

Re-capitalizing the IRGC so they can launch "terror attacks" across the Middle East to justify more American interventions is a dick move. Israel wants dead Muslims and Iraq, Syria, and Yemen weren't killing them fast enough. More wars in more places fought by American neocons is the solution with only the minor problem of Iran being close to broke. Enter Obama and his planes full of cash. It's not enough money to materially improve the lives of Iranian citizens, but plenty to finance operatives and ordinance. Too bad about the Hilldawg becomes President and commits the goyim to battle phase of the plan.

I don't think Syria (or any of the Arab spring) was Obama's personal project. It originated from the Deep State. Obama went along with it, and much more at the beginning of his presidency (still finding his feet) than at the end (where he got more of a clue). I believe he was surrounded by bad advisors (just like Trump) but he still managed to resist the worst aspects of their foreign policy. Read Seymor Hersh's Red Line Rat Line article. Obama made that red line, and then it was supposedly crossed. But Obama dug deeper and found out he was getting false intel so he got a clue (Turkey false flag gas) and so didn't retaliate. Also kept Syria to a proxy war, didn't officially fight with US troops (Trump escalated while he was finiding his feet). Obama also provided no new proper ground wars (something the Republicans REEEEEEEEEEE'd at for 8 years, calling him weak and a wimp), and massively resisted the Pentagon wanting more troops for Afghanistan (remember his spats with the generals, especially McChrystal. McChrystal wanted to ramp up in Afgh again and Obama said fuck you and fired him). And inititated the large-scale pullout form Iraq (before (((ISIS))) appeared out of nowhere). Obama also was probably behind the political hitjob ending Petraeus's career. And then of course, the Iran deal itself which drove Israel, Saudi and the neocons at home crazy.

He was still a failure of a president overall, because even the good things he did (Iran deal, fuck you to Israel at the UN, and a couple of other smaller things at home which I won't get into because the thread will go off in a tangent) were not permanent they were so super fragile that the next pres came in and undid them with a magic wand. He accomplished no permanent change, no structural change. But I still overall believe that he resisted the absolute worst pressures of the military-industrial-complex, and for that I'm grateful that we got him instead of Hillary, McCain or Romney.
