How can anyone unironically blame Trump for the shutdown?

It's a fight more or less to say that national populism is ineffective. Personally, I'm a bit confused by why they've doubled down so much on this instead of just using it as leverage.

The wall is superficial. The reason for all this is two fold.

1) Establish who the alpha is here. Essentially, it's a gut check / game of chicken between trump and the house to see who's tougher.

2) Setting up for 2020. Dems know if trump gets a wall he's got a huge feather in his cap for his campaign. If dems deny him they can tout that they stopped him to the TDS sufferers of the party and push back upstart non establishment types. And, they can better argue trump accomplished nothing to try to demoralize his base.

Neither really care about the people hurt by the shutdown, despite all the crocodile tears by dems. They wouldn't keep point to the who's to blame pols if they actually did care whenever it's discussed.

Trump himself, before the shutdown, said he'd do it and that he'd own it and be proud. It's 100% the Trump shutdown, as he's admitted on national television in front of the entire world.

Trump started it but the opposition could help end it. Instead of trying to compromise on something, anything, they're playing chicken with a president who has nothing to lose. If he doesn't get re-elected then he goes back to making way more money than he earned being the president. Meanwhile the opposition has to deal with contributing to messing with livelihood of thousands of people over 0.001% of the federal budget.
