Jim Jones was a leftist minister who moved his church from Mendocino County, CA to SF in the 70's. He became very influential in SF Democrat politics and counted George Moscone, Willie Brown and Harvey Milk among his supporters. But an article in New West magazine in 1977 alleged that Peoples Temple members were subject to physical and emotional abuse by Jones and others and being coerced to give all their property to the church. Jones then moves with most of his congregation to Guyana where a demonstration farm is being carved out of the jungle. Back in the US, Congressman Leo Ryan (D-CA), after hearing stories from former Temple members decides to go to Guyana to investigate. After touring Jonestown and interviewing temple members there, he insists that those who want to leave with him should be allowed to do so. That sets Jim Jones off and he orders an assassin squad to kill Ryan, his entourage and the defectors. Back at Jonestown, the mass suicide unfolds.
