Why didn't he fight this hard for the wall two years ago?
He was in a far better position to negotiate back when Republicans held control of the House, yet he dragged his feet until after the mid-terms, when Dems won back the majority.
It seems to me as if he never had any intentions of building it in the first place. He just sat and waited for an opportune time to lay the blame on the Democrats.

Because he needed to get his adversary to drop their guard down and manipulate them when they least expect it. This whole wall-shutdown thing is just to purge some of his enemies and their footsoldiers from seats of power. And with them culled, he'd be able to do more. Remember, the government going back online is temporary. If things don't work out the way it has to, another round of shutdown that leads to layoffs will ensue, with his enemies getting gutted even further. Bend the knee or get kneecapped and be forced to kneel.
