/etm/ - EARTH TO MARS

Welcome to the Earth To Mars General.
This thread is dedicated to the discussion of creating a European Colony on Mars, not by direct funding, but through the commercial emigration scheme that will eventually come into play.

The first Mars Colony is predicted to be established as early as 7 years from now. Very quickly the colony is going to expand, and it is becoming clear that it will not be long until commercial emigration comes in to play. This means the first large influx of settlers over the next 50 years are going to be families who can afford the ticket. Only people who can afford to move there will be able to.
lets face it - a strong European presence on Mars is the only way to truly secure our future.
>Plan:
/etm/ is a new general and a work in progress. Essentially, once the colonisation effort becomes commercial, we need to move there.

the short term goal of this general is to simply re-inspire each other on the subject of space exploration & colonisation. We hope to promote a new positive attitude towards life on Mars amongst those who value the future of the European peoples.

>Remember why we fight.
This is definitely not about abandoning the problems we have here on Earth, we believe that the European peoples are not only strong enough to overcome those problems, but are able to dedicate themselves on multiple fronts, Mars is that other front.

>also,
I need to update the general a fair bit, but i've been busy lately - as always, the general continues to be a place on Jow Forums to talk about Mars and other space related topics.

>next thread
I normally post it every Saturday 10pm GMT. Tonight i've posted it slightly earlier.

>There are signs of liquid water on Mars.
For years Mars has been known to have water in the form of ice. The first signs of trickling water are dark stripes or stains on crater wall and cliffs seen in satellite images. Due to Mars’ atmosphere this water would have to be salty to prevent it from freezing or vaporizing.

a few interesting words in regards to business opportunities on Mars
>Water Purification/Production
Besides oxygen, of course, the only thing that will be more important on Mars than food will be clean drinking water. Scientists believe that there is water on Mars; however, they are not sure if it’s drinkable. Consequently, if there is water on Mars, someone will need to purify and make it suitable for consumption. If there is no water on Mars, then some really smart people will figure out a cost-effective way to produce H2O from hydrogen and oxygen. Either way, water will be big business on Mars.
>Hospitality and Entertainment
Nobody likes to eat or stay at home all the time, so there will be a need for entertainment, virtual reality centers, hotels, and restaurants of all kinds. If tourism to Mars ever becomes popular (and I think it will,) the need for hospitality and entertainment providers will be huge. As with all other things on Mars, eating out or taking a vacation will probably be expensive. Therefore, for those savvy chefs, hoteliers, and producers that get in on the ground floor, there will absolutely be plenty of money to be made in these industries.
>Construction/Infrastructure
Depending on the environmental concerns and requirements settlers face when they arrive on Mars, it’s hard to tell how construction and infrastructure will need to be approached. One this is certain, though, and that is people will need places to live and work as well as other necessities such as bridges, walkways, and streets (or something similar to streets.)

In the beginning, governments or authorities may handle initial construction projects. Still, I don’t think it will be long thereafter that the private sector will be doing most of the building. Building homes, condos and whatever else on Mars will be expensive and possibly dangerous. Therefore, expect contractors — big and small — to earn good livings in this field.

>another cut from a different article
there are many potential near-term business opportunities connected with human missions to Mars with significant potential markets for the associated technologies and capabilities required for creating a sustainable human presence on the surface of Mars. These include innovations in life support, agriculture, radiation shielding, energy, on-site resource utilization (aka living off the land), filtration, and many other necessary technologies and capabilities. Many of these technologies would not require the massive level of investment for development that large mission elements like heavy-lift rockets, crew vehicles, propulsion, and habitats require. With the proper stimulus and the necessary entrepreneurial innovators, these technologies could be developed in a competitive manner, and they also likely will have application to improving life on Earth and therefore also have a significant market on Earth—thus making them particularly attractive to entrepreneurs, small businesses, and others.

>more
Whether humans reach Mars through a government effort, a commercial model, or a combination of the two, there are remarkable opportunities that will accompany that journey. These opportunities are not only for discovery but also for innovators, entrepreneurs, and others to create new or better products that contribute to the sustainability of humans on Mars and also benefit people on the planet Earth.

>more
While cosmonauts and astronauts are learning valuable spacefaring skills on the International Space Station — and the U.S. is using virtual reality to train scientists — the majority of work to prepare for interplanetary expeditions is being done on Earth...and where best to field-test equipment and people for the journey to Mars but on some of the planet's most forbidding spots.
Seen from space, the Dhofar Desert is a flat, brown expanse. Few animals or plants survive in the desert expanses of the Arabian Peninsula, where temperatures can top 125 degrees Fahrenheit, or 51 degrees Celsius.
On the eastern edge of a seemingly endless dune is the Oman Mars Base: a giant 2.4-ton inflated habitat surrounded by shipping containers turned into labs and crew quarters. There are no airlocks. The desert's surface resembles Mars so much, it's hard to tell the difference, the types of geomorphology, all the structures, the salt domes, the riverbeds, the wadis, it parallels a lot of what we see on Mars.

Scientists from across the world sent ideas for experiments such as testing a new spacesuit called Aouda, the cutting-edge spacesuit, weighing about 50 kilograms (110 pounds), is called a "personal spaceship" because one can breathe, eat and do hard science inside it. The suit's visor displays maps, communications and sensor data. A blue piece of foam in front of the chin can be used to wipe your nose and mouth.
>Something to consider, for your or your children's future
there will be a huge demand for engineers, medical experts, management "officers" and any sort of cross between those and other fields. So people with that kind of background could secure themselves a bright future on Mars.

>interesting read
French 3D-printing company Fabulous has brought together a team of scientists and architects to imagine a bubble-shaped habitat for Mars that can be printed on the red planet. The Sfero house features an internal and external dome, with a protective pocket of water between the two. A single corridor rests on the planet's surface and allows access to the interior, which would have an upper and lower level linked by a spiral staircase. The house would start off as a central drilling rod that burrows several metres into the planet's soil to extend two robotic arms, which would harvest materials to be used for 3D-printing the habitat's internal and external dome-shaped shells. The spherical shape has been designed to offer high resistance to Mars' low atmospheric density. The design aims to use the red planet's abundance of iron oxide – discovered in dust samples and rocks brought back by NASA's Pathfinder rovers – which would form the raw material for 3D printing. The powdered iron particles would then be fused together by laser, and the levels of the habitat printed layer by layer.
The arms would also seek out permafrost – soil that has been at or below freezing for at least two years – to be melted and used as a 30-centimetre-wide water pocket in between the two shells to protect against solar radiation.
Fabulous founder Arnault Coulet believes the water layer could be a "permanent psychological reminder of the main element of the mother planet – water constituting a sort of protective amniotic fluid for humans."

Nigga, I like the topic but this is more like /sci/ence fiction?

Setting up a Mars colony is so far beyond our tested capabilities at the moment? And where would the money come from to get us over there? Then you have the problems of isolation and probably boredom among colonists. These are are all major issues before we even talk about the deadly Martian Space Jew.

>this is more like /sci/ence fiction?
>far beyond our tested capabilities at the moment?
I decided it belongs on Jow Forums because of the "14 words" element. And it's not fiction, as far as i'm aware, SpaceX is still on schedule to launch a cargo mission to Mars in 2024.

>the money come from to get us over there?
Elon said he wants to get the price of moving there down to around 800,000 asap, which is more or less the price of a house here on earth (which you will no longer need)

>Then you have the problems of isolation and probably boredom among colonists. These are are all major issues
I agree.... that's all out of our hands though. There will be ... the WHOLE of Mars to explore which should keep alot of people busy.

>the deadly Martian Space Jew.
i dont even want to talk about space kikes lol

we /spaceforce/ now

OP I think you said for us to remind you to work on making an /etm/ recommended reading list

>i dont even want to talk about space kikes
Good because I've already said too much.

damn i actually did forget about this. thanks for reminding me

i'll sort it out

Attached: earthlight.jpg (832x1395, 460K)

wow I never considered any of this
I think I remember reading a while ago that the United Arab Emirates wants to build a hotel there or something lol

errr i can't remember exactly, it might be a research facility.... but I remember reading about it and how they are going to build a prototype out in the desert

bump

don't worry OP, I'm lurking and waiting for discussion

slow night again

Pathetic. All I'm seeing here is just propaganda and outright fantasization without any concrete basis in reality.

SpaceX are launching a cargo mission in 2024

That's it? That's all you have to say? You're just stroking your dick to Elon's massive rocket. You think all we have to do to have a Mars colony is land one single rocket, which mind you may or may not be successful, and that's it? We're gonna have a Mars colony with one rocket! ...And one with blackjack and hookers too!

>You think all we have to do to have a Mars colony is land one single rocket,
of course not...

>Aouda
Ground test platform, not even a pressure suit. Simulators are cool and all but even US universities are ahead of national level space projects in Europe.
>Fabulous
3D printed habitats are meme tech. The amount of attention 3D printing gets in this context really shows a lack of understanding of the various space environments, safety and current practice.
Unlikely but they'll eventually do it.
>one with blackjack and hookers
Only real reason to go to space. I like these threads but the Bong posts about a European Mars colony that is 100% US built, financed and developed. Europe just gets to take credit and make us feel bad for not being inclusive enough.
>we /spaceforce/ now
Hell, yeah.

Attached: Driving_the_Eurobot_Ground_Prototype_node_full_image_2.jpg (700x525, 96K)

>The amount of attention 3D printing gets in this context really shows a lack of understanding of the various space environments, safety and current practice.

I understand but surely more advanced 3D printing will come into play at some point

>what are hoop strength, tension and compression, QA procedures and a million variables?
Even metal printers aren't up to the task. It's much simpler and safer to plan on producing rolled stock if iron is needed. Much simpler to just bag regolith up over trenches and in domes. Worry about feedstocks and foundries when there are enough people there.

Attached: lunarbase.jpg (400x250, 32K)

I'm snownigger/Scottish, am I eligible to join?

dunno, are you poor ? moving there isn't exactly going to be cheap

>lunarbase

man... trump has so much shit on his plate its like hes never going to get round to talking about this stuff
he mentioned the space force like twice but thats it

Joining leaf military and have super iq so I'm hoping for priority

>The first Mars Colony is predicted to be established as early as 7 years from now.
You fags are fucking delusional.

>implying the first person on mars won’t be a negress.
You marsfags have no upper boundary on your delusions, do you?

what percentage of astronauts alive today are niggers to start with lol
its not even something im worried about

>meme tech.
Good for small, temporary parts i.e. gears, hinges, keys, kitchenware, cases etc. Not good for anything bigger than a computer case. Like CNC only shitter

Irrelevant, they will ship them along as cargo and they will exit the craft first, making history.

kek

My critique is in particular with 3D printing human rated pressure vessels. The technology is potentially useful it's just not the perfect thing for all objects.
years
> delusional.
It's a 50 year project, minimum, for something that looks like a colony. Musk will get there but it's going to be 2030 or '35 before he puts cargo on the surface. Shit's hard, yo.

This nigger said 7 years, and thinks we will have movie theatres and hotels 5ere in our lifetime.

By the time you die mars will be little more than the worlds slowest execution process with the most expensive casket in history.

I like that comparison. I think we'll eventually see a couple of small, man tended research outposts and company towns.
The real action, was, is and always will be destinations built in interesting places in space not planetary surfaces. Space habitats will eventually be able to be built to any needs.
Seven years for first humans on Mars? SpaceX hasn't even put a human in orbit yet.

Step one has and always will be to create a self-sufficient and fully contained base ON EARTH. Until that happens this is all pure fantasy and hardly worth considering. Until then you can send robots.

No colony or base is self sufficient. Boston was always a trading harbor, same with Nassau, Charleston, etc. Colonies exist because their is favorable transportation or something really interesting at that location, preferably both.
An ethnostate on Mars is as unlikely as a perfectly sustainable colony with no outside ties.

>their
wtf

SpaceX is not the only group trying to do this now. They have american competitors with similar time frames, and IIRC China has set out a similar timeframe as well, recently.

No one will land anything related to humans on Mars in the 2020s. JPL will land a couple rovers and China and India too. SpaceX will keep working toward their human landing goal but won't start a launch campaign until 2040, 2035 earliest. It's just to hard, to dangerous and to expensive.

Then those people are going to die as soon as they miss supplies, and mars becomes the biggest welfare state in history.

>Colonies exist because their is favorable transportation or something really interesting at that location

Also, mars has niether of these and the second “reason” is a lie.

I hope you like the taste of S O Y OP, cause Musk says only vegetarians are allowed on mars:
theregister.co.uk/2012/11/27/musk_mars_colony/

Redundancy counts but those are long supply lines.
>the second “reason” is a lie.
Explain? I was referring to locations that cities grew up around supply of a unique resource, Kingstown and sugar, Pittsburg and coal and ore, etc.

He also says no weapons on Mars which is sci-fi nonsense.

space elevator?

Attached: 1537163775585.jpg (419x424, 37K)

People will want to go because it's Mars. People will want to go to get away from the government. There are reasons.

I don't see that in the article at all.

meat on Mars is going to be sci-fi nonsense for some time. It just requires too much resources. Hope you enjoy !

why go to mars?
there's literally no point except to waste money.
let the robots do it, we're never putting colonies there

Read, faggot.

here ya go.
>>"I'm a big fan of free choice for any future Martian colony. That said, it is likely that early Mars colonists would have a mostly vegetable diet, because of the energy and space needed to raise farm animals."
space.com/12679-vegans-mars-peta-campaign-space-food.html
You're gonna have to eat the S O Y!

>go to mars to escape government
no mate, this guys got brain damage

Depends on what you consider meat. I'll tell you that the kind of people that actually go and do those sorts of things aren't vegan.
Earthworms, insects, rabbits, goats, certain fish, etc can convert cellulose to useful food in limited space. I'd rather have an occasional worm burger than edamame patties again.

Implying the most managed, controlled spaces ever are somehow Freedumb.
The Mars as Wild West analogy is ridiculous.

space is fake

This

Listen dude. There was this guy named John Kelly. He stayed in the ISS for a year to determine what long term zero gravity did to the body. When he got back to earth he couldn't to anything. Ever nerve in his body was have to learn what gravity felt like again. Laying down on a bed hurt. Having a blanket on top of him hurt.

Therefore, if we go to Mars then we can't do it in zero gravity. So we would have to construct a vessel IN SPACE that uses centripetal force to simulate gravity. Then this vessel would have to act as a staging area for all travel going to and from mars.

Once we get the artificial gravity space station orbiting mars we would have to launch a vessel onto mars. This vessel would have to carry everything that the people needed.

Given the extremely harsh whether and climate, we couldn't use bubble house like in the movies. We would have to build and live underground. There is no way for us to excavate that much material to do this. There is no oxygen so the engine is not practical. Everything would have to run off electricity. Running bulldozers and dump truck off of electricity is not going to happen.

On top of that, the soil has salts which PREVENT BACTERIA FROM GROWING! this means that you will have to import the organic matter you will grow all vegetation in.

Did i mention there is no oxygen?

This isn't going to happen people.

But go ahead and tell me about Elon Musk's reusable rockets, his GigaFactory and how he will nuke Mars to jump start its atmosphere.

You fucking morons. Anyone who thinks we are going to colonize mars is a fucking idiot.

EVEN IF WE COULD/DID... How would that help out the human race?

Get over it people. We are stuck on planet earth. You will die one day. Humanity will die one day. One day our solar system will not exist. Everything has an end. EMBRACE IT and quit pretending there is a solution to this ultimate fate...

Tldr
Space is fake AND gay

Where is our moon caffee? It's been so many years and you still can't eat hamberders on the moon. When does the moon tourism start?

Journey to Mars is less than 7 months, effects of zero G will be minor btw

Sad and cringe

bump
