All four of my grandparents moved here in the 1920's. My father was raised in a nice place: South LA. Not far from where the LA riots happened. (The 2012 riots, not the 1968 riots.) He once took me to his old street. Not too bad looking at first, but bars on all the windows and a pretty bad vibe.

OTOH, all the shit that everyone just HAS to have, stereos, Big TVs, juicers, bread makers, hell, even portable transistor radios, had not been even invented. Families had a ma, pa, some kids, a car, a home, beds, clothes, frying pans, sauce pans, a crappy refrigerator that barely works and a piece of furniture that doubled as a radio.
