I know Bono as well as any fan could. I've followed U2's career very closely for over 25 years. I've read around a dozen biographical books on the band and I've seen countless documentary videos on the band and its members. Bono (Paul Hewson), The Edge (Dave Evans), and Larry Mullin jr all grew up on the same block together from their preteen years, and he married his wife when they were just 16 years old and still married. Adam Clayton moved to their block from England not long after. The three Irishmen grew up deeply and devoutly Christian. The great not-so-secret about U2 is that they are a Christian rock band, and a very large part of their belief is charity. Bono (as do many other enormously wealthy people and corporations) use existing laws to hide their wealth away from taxation. The difference with Bono is that he hides his wealth from taxation so that he can choose where to redistribute that wealth rather than his government. Bono and his band mates are the opposite of greedy. You may not agree with where he focuses his time and wealth but he does in fact pour an extraordinary amount of personal time and wealth into his two charities and personal endeavors.

If you listen superficially to his flippant comments he might sound like a socialist, but in fact he and his Christian band mates strongly believe that with wealth comes an obligation to use that wealth for the benefit of others. Try to keep in mind that Bono, like all musicians, is a performance artist that has an artistic stage persona different than their real-life persona. The man is genuinely humble and a genuinely good human being.

It's super cool how Bono has his own version of the Joker called Mr. MacPhisto. It's really twisted and scary and reminds me of Trump. U2's next album would be The Joshua Tree in 1987. That album begins with the song Where The Streets Have No Name which is essentially a song about wishing someday to be granted entry into Heaven. The instrument and note playing on MLK as the song ends is the same instrument and note playing as Where The Streets Have No Name begins.
