I actually grew up in poverty. Real poverty.
Single mother with three children poverty. She didn't even take safety net program money if she could help it, we used food stamps like 4 times, and used food banks every few years, and every time she was ashamed of doing it, she had to to feed us sometimes, but she always hung her head while doing so. I remember one time I asked her what the stamps were (back before the cards they use now) and she said "I hope you never have to find out".
She worked 60 hours a week, quite literally destroying her spine in the process for 25 years to raise us.
