Western Art music is our birthright and our heritage, and it is our responsibility to be versed in it, but I am skeptical about actually "supporting" it by attending events, since its usually culturally illiterate gentry showing off by going. Oh yeah, I know Bernstein was a Jew. He was also a shitlib of the worst kind, hosted parties for the Black Panthers, etc. I thought many of his recordings from the 1960s were excellent. Still consider his 1964 recording of Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 2 and 7 my favorites. He did a fine job with Nielsen 's symphonies and he's still the go-to guy for American composers (Copland, Gershwin).

There are lots of other conductors: Furtwaengler, Knappertsbusch, Boehm, Klemperer, Krauss, Keilberth, Kleiber Sr and Kleiber Jr. Even Toscanini and Richard Strauss himself, just to name a few.
