The reality is it was a different era with human beings who think completely differently than we do now. There is really no one to blame as everyone was guilty of some atrocity then. That being said the end goal of the Catholic states was not genocide but converting the native masses to their religion which is what the Catholic church has always hungered for and still does today — more souls, more soldiers of christ, and most important, more monetary donations.
