German gun emplacements were offset and shooting up the length of the beach, and not the boats as Americans love to claim. The distance between the gun emplacements and the water was about 700-800+ ft away.
The SPR view is more exciting, simple as that. Opening the landing boat doors and immediately getting lit up by some crazed German intent on killing American soldiers is far more interesting than getting lit up from far away.

The most the British Empire could pull off is shitty battles in North Africa in a desperate bid to not lose the Suez to some halfass German army. The tide of the war had already turned before we joined in. Had our country not sent supplies to the Soviets early on, then yeah it could have ended differently, but in such case we'd have had no chance against Germany. Soviets had the numbers to win despite a massive negative k/d in order to do so and poor foresight of Reich meteorologists helped too.
