That would be way more expensive than a wall and military grade ground sensors. And all paco would have to do is locate the cables (which is actually easy to do with relatively cheap equipment) and bend it. A single, clean break in a fiber optic cable is ridiculously expensive to fix and requires a sterile lab to do so. But, if you just bend it, rather than a clean break, it becomes a major problem to even locate the break.

All the people calling for "smart border security" don't (or actually do) realize that anything involving drones or people or active measures can just be disabled when a democrat gets into office and says "don't enforce the law." Those drones won't be able to stop immigrants in 2025 when the democrat president says not to use them, but that physical wall will at least slow crossers down and stop others. The point of a wall is that it can't be easily undone by the next administration. Yes, it could be left to fall into disrepair, or maybe even dismantled, but those take time, and hopefully not so long that by 2033 the republican president can campaign on repairing the neglected wall.
