I have employees who have turned down raises and promotions for fear of moving up a tax bracket and losing their govt benefits. Their careers plateau. It doesn't happen when you reach 250k. It happens at the switch from hourly to salary. From retail manager to district manager. Raises don't happen 100k at a time. they happen hundreds or a thousand dollars at a time. by taking a $500 raise you could loose thousands worth of food stamps.

I've seen it multiple times, first hand, and it's truly upsetting. People are absolutely disincentivized to earn more.

This is absolutely true but only on the threshholds of wage tax brackets.
So at the bottom of tax brackets of course they take raises, but as they get close to the top of their threshold, it's often a huge loss to take the raise.
So like say for example it was 20% until 40k and at 41k it becomes 40%
so at 40k you earn 32k after tax and at 41k you earn 25k roughly which is HUGE
So a complete disaster unless you earn like 55k

no, they want to force people to sell their illiquid assets to pay the government, not realizing the consequences this would have for markets. some also want a wealth tax which means the IRS would have to be able to determine the value of assets that aren't even on the market
