Back when the M16 was first adopted, they issued the guns without cleaning kits, they changed the propellant in the 5.56x45 and all sorts of shit like that. It was literal sabotage.
As it turns out, the AR-15 design has pretty much no ingress points for gunk and stuff in the ejection port gets blown out of the way because of how Stoner's not-quite-DGI system works.

They are expensive so I get if you can only afford one. The odds you being next to that one when you need it are pretty slim, unless you live a studio apartment. I had a 2bed/2bath apartment and I was in the shower during a break in. Gun was in the master bedroom and 3 guys were between me and my gun. You should have one gun per living space which you spend more than 10% of your time in. Anywhere you sleep, one centered in the house and scattered around. Hand guns if you have small kids.
