Ireland was just like Polska a couple decades ago. A poor, conservative country with vast rural areas and a strong tradition and an interesting history. They were very Catholic, too (at least nominally). Yet they are nowadays one of the most Progressive countries in Europe.

All the Catholic Church/social-conservatism issue can be good bait for voters, wether they like it or they disapprove of it. People might go vote for whoevever seems more identified with the RCC or social-liberalism, but in the ned, politicians can easily break their promises.

In Ireland, "Conservative" right-wing party Fine Gael has been behind all the "marriage equality" and abortion approvals. Just go ask any Pole that lives there. They even got a gay, ultra-liberal guy elected. Here in Spain the centre-right party PP promised ban on abortion and less "gay rights", and many Catholics voted for them: they got the highest amount of votes in our history in 2011. 8 years later, nothing has changed. We have the same laws as with centre-left PSOE.

Try not to fall into these "identity politics" when it comes to moral issues. Politicians don't understand of morals,. but voting polls.
