Even if you give the Catholic Church the benefit of the doubt the Jesuit ties of the key plotters make it impossible the Jesuits would have no clue about the plot. The nature of their intelligence gathering is too deep. At a minimum they let the plot occur with foreknowledge.

5 years after the end of the Civil War the Papal States were dissolved by the unification campaign of Freemason Garibaldi. There appears to be a broader reactionary purpose to supporting the Confederacy against the forces of international Liberalism which was anti-clerical (often Jewish and/or Freemason backed).
