I'm a sailor and I have one on my chest. Tattoos are fine for the most part if they have substantial meaning and are well done pieces of art. But if they're trashy pieces of shitty they're fucking degenerate. Face tats are shit as so is neck tats. One or two are fine but that's generally it.

I’m not a fan of piercings. Had my ears pierced when I was a kid, took them out about a year later. I have 3 tattoos though, one I did myself when I was 11, I have my moms name on my calf, then I added her picture above it. The one I did myself looks like shit, it’s just my moms name on my other leg. Only reason I did it was because I asked my grandma to sign my consent form to have it done professionally (obviously she wouldn’t) so I did it myself with a bottle of India ink and a sewing needle.

Well, we ARE almost the only race for whom there's even any point to getting a tattoo. I mean, you can SEE them on us (and fair Asians). If you're black, Indian, or otherwise dark-skinned, it's a huge why-bother type situation.

Personally, I loathe 99% of them and have never gotten one. There are a few which seem okay, especially for men. I think they should generally be in hidden spots, concealed by clothing--especially for women. There's something very personal about them, to my way of thinking. I don't relate at all to the need to show them off.

As to why white people are into them now, well, it's a trend. There've always been a minority of folks who just really dig them but most people are lemmings. I think a lot of them are going to regret getting them in a few years. As a sarcastic old friend of mine pointed out a while back, just wait until they start getting all saggy and crepey. Yech.

If you're gonna do it, think long and hard. Get something deeply meaningful to you personally, something inspiring and thoughtful and reflective of your deepest held beliefs, and have it done where it isn't easily seen. And use a really good artist, someone with talent and experience. DON'T do anything trendy. And use color for fuck's sake. All these low quality black and white tattoos look like people rolled in wet newsprint, ridiculous.
