California has a climate and terrain most like Spain and Portugal. There are parts of San Diego where I forgot where I was and thought I was back in Andalusia and the Algarve. It is similar in that regard. However, what really drives it is that there are no seasons and never any sense of renewal or a fresh start. The sense of time passing is lost on you if you're not paying attention to a calendar, and this undoubtedly has an effect on your soul. At least in my experience. montana and wyoming are playgrounds for the rich now mostly (though you can still see some astounding beautiful nature as a pleb). colorado is pretty damn degenerate and filled with beans nowadays. if you like the outdoors and want to see the other sides of america i highly suggest you do the east tennessee thing (great smoky mountains, fall creek falls, chickamauga battlefield, etc.) take in the history and see the old rivers, forests and mountains. they have a different character than the fiercer land to the west.
