Well it depends: not all forms of assault are equal, and if we categorized rape as assault and lined up types of assault by severity rape would be pretty high up the list because it puts into jeopardy the one thing that men hold valuable in women (the security of their own genetic line) all in exchange for a momentary comfort of a complete stranger.
The fact that society doesn't hold women's chastity in high regard these days is the exact reason society is failing, and rape is something a healthy society should condemn in all ways and forms, if only for the stability of family and home. People can recover from beatings but people that are raped usually end up pretty fucked up about it, and to not punish rapists to a satisfactory degree enables a culture that devalues women as commodities instead of future mothers, again, as an ideal society- not the one we have.
