it was an insurance scam, what sank wasnt the titanic but its sistership (olympia it was called i think) it had an accident where the damage wasnt easily repaired and insurance didnt want to pay, so they disguised it as the titanic, let it sink and cashed in the money.

There was a book about it called Wreck of the Titan (or Futility) that released in the late 1800s. It was about an oceanliner called "Titan" with a ton of striking similarities to the Titanic. (((Coincidentally))) some details were changed and the book was reprinted after the disaster.
As everyone knows, not enough lifeboats only enough for about half of the passengers. Also as many anons mentioned there were many wealthy people on board who were staunchly opposed to the Fed. Boat sinks Fed is founded shortly after.
After she sank there was a ship called the SS Californian who saw the distress flares but didn't respond; It was only approximately 20 miles away. The ship that responded was the RMS Carpathia which was more than 50 miles away (taking several hours to respond)
Another interesting fact: During construction there was a bad fire that damaged the hull right around the same spot that it struck the iceberg. Some people believe that if the structural integrity of the hull wasn't screwed up by the fire then the Titanic might not have sank.

There was a fire burning in the ship, but they would have had to cancel the trip to fix it and the company couldn't afford that kind of financial loss after what happened to the sister ship, so they set sail anyway. It also explained why the ship was going as fast as it was, hoping the coal fire wouldn't get out of control before they reached the US where the ship would get its repairs.

It was a coal fire, which could happen on those ships and basically it was sitting there slow burning and so long as it never raged out of control, they just dealt with it, but they think now that fire weakened the steel enough that the collision did a lot more damage than it otherwise would have.
