There was plenty of organized crime in the US before the Italians were here; gangs in the cities and syndicates in the Wild West. The Sicilians benefited from the timing of prohibition and the internal social structure that was long a part of their culture. There were a lot of places Italians immigrated to in the US that did not have any organized crime (italian coal miners in appalachia for instance.)
