I used to be one of the dumbshits who thought the US had no culture, but then I watched Lawless a couple of days ago and gotta say, what little I know of Appalachia I absolutely love.

Good camping grounds. The best areas are touristy to hell though. Contains the #1 most visited National Park. Some drugged out small towns on your way to the park though. Can't hear what the people are even saying, as the dialect can get crazy just over a mountain range. Southern Ohioian here, I've met these people. Once sold a geo metro to a guy who I didn't even know what he was saying. 250$s.
Not sure if he scrapped it, or fixed it up. Only understood that he wanted it, and the problems with it( the O rings were fucked on the motor, could dive it to the store and back, but there'd be smoke and it might just stop). Seemed gleeful.

It's really a fun read. It's not what you think it is. It's literally kids taped interviews with mountain people. And the mountain people explaining how you get shit done. It's like time traveling but even more amazing because people are still up there living like that. Plus the book and the other following issues are kind of like a beginners survival guide to some extent.

A lot of the rural appalachians are dirt fucking poor.
They are hearty people, with a lot of spirit and pride, but often times they are poorly educated, monetarily poor, and more often than not, have poor standards of living/cleanliness.
Having been in many of the homes in a "Great Valley Country" county, almost all of them have been dingy little houses, sitting on unkempt lots, filled with junk, with the people themselves barely speaking understandable english (appalachian, it is its own language) and being generally disgusting.

Not too long ago an appalachian man needed to be taken to the hospital for chest pain. When getting him set up for an IV, one of my partners shows me the alcohol pad he used to clean his arm, it was fucking brown. This guy was literally so filthy, that wiping him with an alcohol pad removed probably weeks of filth.

To make it worse, he spoke deep appalachian. The average person would only be able to understand every 10th word.

Always loved the area between Chattanooga and Knoxville.

Also, went hitchhiking once, slept in a wooded area between the north/southbound lanes of I-75 , beside two other hitchers who did it as their occupation. Got molested the next day up near Greenville by John Wayne Gacy's doppelganger, Concluded my hitching career.

I used to live in Irvine, KY, visited beattyville often cause of friends and Youth Haven Bible Camp. It was backwards for sure. Comfortable in some way, but god it got boring sometimes.
