I doubt this will happen. This is a debate happening all over the world right now but the best solution looks like using both. Amerimutts tried making an AP 5.56x45 but that didn't work (they spent billions of dollars on them and started shipping them to troops only to find out that they have no penetration advantage and destroy gun receivers) so the US is looking at readopting 7.62 NATO and is developing a new 6mm round as well. At the same time 5.45/5.56/5.8 are very light weight and good against unarmored targets.

While in Aleppo, I met independent Syrian Member of Parliament, Boutros Merjaneh. When I asked about what issues Syrians are facing now, MP Merjaneh highlighted the criminal western sanctions against Syrians.
"They have a hard effect directly on the Syrian people. We don't have oil, we don't have electricity (as a result of the oil shortage), we don't have milk for children. We don't have medical equipment and spare parts for medical equipment, we don't have medicines. So, it's a very big problem for Syrian civilians."
"We have medical equipment that was eliminated in Western countries--they don't use it (any longer). They don't allow us to get spare parts for those equipment."
