Russia is doing OKAY-ish considering the recent sanctions. It became more independent than before.
Geography is one of their problems.
Size, by itself, can be a disadvantage. It usually means you'll have more natural resources and it might have other advantages, but also, unless it's all good land, it makes things farther apart. Russia doesn't have that much good land. Climate isn't so great.
Also, they lack good non-arctic sea access. This is a big deal. They can be blockaded. It's always been a US strategy to make sure that they could be if needed.
Russia is very hard to defend. It's currently not in a secure configuration. That makes national defense very expensive. The borders need to be expanded in 4-5 places to reach natural barriers and chokepoints. Something that they probably cannot currently do.
