Not like anything we did or said had any real impact anyway. Something like 95% of things we voted against in the EU passed anyway.

The Republic of Ireland is a relatively young country. It formed like 100 years ago. Before that it was part of Britain, they just wanted independence and they got it.
Thing is, part of Ireland wanted to remain British. So they did. This is North Ireland.

The troubles was basically people from the Republic of Ireland wanting to unite Ireland and have North Ireland become part of the republic. Problem with this was people from North Ireland just didn't want to leave Britain and become part of the republic.
Then there was a bunch of murders, terrorism and so on between these two groups.

Then the good friday agreement came about. Which basically says a bunch of stuff but the two main things are that the republic and the north are two distinct places with their own rules and government but despite this, citizens of one have the right to live in and become citizens of the other and that if the citizens of North Ireland want, they can hold a referendum on uniting the two and both the British and Irish governments will respect this.

But to this day, the north want to be part of Britain.

Ironically the concessions that David Cameroon secured for us would have prevented the total federalisation of the EU.

He got them to agree that we were exempt from the "ever closer union" so had we stayed in our presence would have been the fly in the ointment so to speak.

Of course now we're leaving there is little or nothing to prevent the EU continually moving toward a future that looks like a untied states of Europe.
