So, let's assume Syria attacks Israel. Israel would steam roll his formal army, and Syria would have to depend on Russia taking an aggressive stance. Russia really has no interest in getting into a proxy war with the US over Israel - it's extremely low reward, and very high risk. Even without this proxy, Israel is actually an extremely effective military in its sphere of operating... whereas the Russians are quite far from their own.

So, Russia isn't going to be willing to do much. Keep in mind, Assad is playing his cards as best as possible to remain in charge. This is important, because at the moment his position is a house of cards. Assad isn't replaced simply because the rebels haven't won, and Russia, Iran, and Turkey haven't placed a government to replace his. If Russia really had to choose between outright making a puppet out of Syria versus going into a war with Israel, it would be a very easy choice.

Who Syria really has as an ally is Hezbollah and Iran. And Hezbollah isn't exactly Syrian national-secular interests. Likewise, you'd run into the same problem as before - Israel would steam roll the formal army because that's really what their army is designed to do. This is actually unfortunate for Israel, because assuming there is no government that formally claims Syria, Israel would have to deal with an insurgency in Syria and Lebanon for years or the power vacuum that it creates.... and Assad will probably lost his actual power in the situation.
