Youtube's evolution is a good example of this. when it was new, Youtube was a legitimate community where users could customize their youtube page, you ranked videos on a five star system, and there were legitimate discussions and groups; Social networking features without the venom. Little was censored. Then Google bought it and it quickly became the shitshow we have today. It's a microcosm of the change in the internet at large.
I remember using RealVideo to handle video/audio streaming on my websites prior to YouTube as well.
