Do you really ever get over depression? Or is it something that follows you for the rest of your life?

Assuming no drugs, it'll always follow you, but you can train hard and tell it to fuck off when it tries its shit again.
The key here is to realize that depression isn't how you feel, and is just bullshit that your body is pulling on you. Work to discern depression from actual sadness.
Once you've gotten this, it's just a matter of training to DO SHIT and ignore depression when it hits. It goes away easier if you don't give in.
In my case, it’s more like cold sore outbreaks. Can last anything from 2wks to years, then goes and you think it might just be the last one, then for no fucking reason you’re isolating yourself again and fantasising about killing yourself. Still have to go to work, mind... still have to do all the boring, numbing everyday things because I’m an able-bodied white male, so no gibes, but you feel like utter death whilst doing it.
So yeah, fun. Fucking uwu
Solid vent. You *can* always get antideps. You probably should if you've had this for years without learning to beat it.
I’m still standing m8. Plus my mum is on anti-deps and I’ve heard some horror stories...
you went to app state?
I did. And I know what is it. Don't use antidepressants. Depression is a very important phase in the brain life. It's shut's down big areas, makes it inactive for significant period - 1-6 month. After that people usually can train new behavioral patterns and get success. After that people usually cry. It calls "winner cry" in my terms... The crying unblocks depressed areas, and dissolves strong connections in wrong working patterns... So, be strong. People was created to be able to pass through depression many times...
yes
Just came by to share some stuff to help with depression: the first is a series of fairly short affirmations and guided meditations: mediafire.com
Literally 20 minutes a day or so is all it takes (do it for a month or two).
the next one is the Mindful Way Through Depression (pdf also in there) which explains a lot of the brain science and cognitive stuff about rumination. It also includes some guided meditations which are useful to deal with things. I hope this helps some of you.

Get rid of depression, be happy - this is the worst possible mistake. People usually begin from meditation, but finally can't live without antidepressants.
Anti depressant's just made me worse off.
It's kind of both for me. I was depressed for at least ten years. I think I got better from a combination of being in college, having a relationship, and experimenting with dxm. If I had to choose one I'd honestly say the dxm just because that was what really started gradually changing my perspective on life and helped me start appreciating the beauty in things. I still have times where it feels like it's starting to come back, but it's much more manageable than it was back then.
And you are not alone.
Your 10 years depression is a result of experiencing with DXM...
Na dude, the dxm experimenting started after the depression was in full swing. I didn't start experimenting with it until I was in college
It's not even that great, it's so trashy.
For real though, mucinex pills and cough syrup tastes like ass and you'd think all it did was make me feel weird for a few hours. And that's how it started, take some and feel weird and listen to weird music for the rest of the night. But eventually it started turning into feeling spiritual, I still have no idea how a dissociative drug made me feel closer to the universe but it did. Plus, the day after I'm left in a chill, relaxed, happy mood
Still would rather do acid or something though
> But eventually it started turning into feeling spiritual, I still have no idea how a dissociative drug made me feel closer to the universe but it did.
Nah, It just made me have explosive diarrhea, made me hungry, and tired.
LOL Yeah sometimes it'll give me a quick bout of the shits, usually I vomit to some extent, but the good outweighs the bad for me. Plus it's the only legal thing I can get my hands on
You get over it. Only like
I think "depression" is a word that describes too many different things to allow an answer to such a question. But in my experience one can overcome existential terror at least, which felt like others described depression to me for years.
>Do you really ever get over depression?
There's a big difference between clinical depression and other kinds of depression. Can people "get over" being occasionally depressed over routine life stresses? Sure. Can people "get over" clinical depression? No. Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance of the brain. It requires treatment. Trying to self-diagnose and self-treat is one of the more dangerous thing that people with severe depression can do so I always encourage people, no matter how lightly they take their depression, they should see a professional. Clinical depression can be deadly. Its not something that should be ignored.
I've been diagnosed with clinical depression.
of course the best advice in the thread goes unrecognized
Not previous user, but if you have then you'll probably not be able to just 'get over" it. It will always be there, somewhere, sometimes more sometimes less. There's plenty you can to to minimize its impact, though. Things like getting enough sleep, sunlight, vitamins, socialization, emotional support, and financial security can all lessen the effects of clinical depression (and can oftentimes cure situational depression).
I would suggest medication if you haven't tried it yet, as it can make a massive difference. Remember that it's a genetic condition like diabetes or celiac, something that cannot be just removed but can be controlled and managed and greatly improved. You can have a good quality of life even with clinical depression.
Exercise helps, too. Basically you want to do things that boost your natural serotonin levels.
