By the early 70s Nixon was trying to unravel the Johnson mess. Where Johnson more or less put Vietnam on welfare Nixon’s era saw the concept of Americanization, while I don’t agree with it it was working.
To further that north Vietnam had suffered over 10% of its total population as mortal casualties.
North Vietnam was going to collapse but America decided it would rather get high and allow women to take birth control pills and fuck freely.

The biggest and most successful protests during the Vietnam war was the “hard hats protest” ex military, working men, construction workers, unions/brotherhoods, relatives of servicemen demonstrated in support of the troops.
But they weren’t violent so the news never really focused on them, instead looking to disaffected college students trashing campuses.....
