3 was cool because it predominantly left the pristine flat urban environments and took it outdoors. Now you have things like mud, uneven terrain, harmful wildlife, different environments from dense jungle to caves to mountaintops. Basing it in the 60s at a very hot point of the Cold War was a neat setting and giving it a James Bond feel was a nice touch.
3 has its place and its a good one.
