The idea behind the program was that the shift to training pilots for only long range missile encounters was premature, and that dogfighting skills were still needed. That point is long past, even needing pilots at all is on the way out. Top gun is history.

In 1985 was in the Marine Corps living in Sunset Cliffs just outside Point Loma where much of the movie was filmed, my wife and I went to see it on my Honda CB750F. When it was over we rode over to the San Diego marina and replayed the kiss scene. We even looked somewhat similiar to Cruise and McGillis because our hair styles and colors were identical. :) Great fun. Later Clint Eastwood came into my unit's area (1st Recon) and filmed Heartbreak Ridge.

In retrospect I see it as one in a series of morale rebuilding propaganda movies preparing the public and military for wars over the horizon a small cabal was planning to thrust the nation into.

And Tom Cruise almost got himself killed while making Top Gun. He walked pretty close to the red "civilians get shot past this red line" line

As a child I watched that movie so many times I can even count. Btw the only good parts are the ones with planes.

My daughter served on CVN-72 USS Abe Lincoln for three years and made two cruises into the Persian Gulf. I sent her Top Gun, she said many of her friends never saw it before and all enjoyed it.

The combat and training sequence filming was great, no digital effects in the 1980's, but not very realistic due to the short ranges depicted.

Not necessarily.
