I must have watched most of the Star Trek series (Prior to Enterprise) and I still don't understand how the fuck do they decide who gets what.
Even with magic-tier technology and infinite energy, there's still a limited amount of land, how do they decide who gets to own a house, and how large it is?
Also things like private holosuites are stated to be extremely expensive numerous times, so what if someone wants their own private holosuite, or a ship, how do they get that in the Federation?

There is currency. Gold pressed latinum. The space Jews aka ferengi are obsessed with acquiring it. The federation has credits for exchanging goods. Humans internally on their society don't use currency and accumulation of wealth as the basis of their economy because technology has eliminated that need at the micro level. Trade still exists at the macro level mostly revolving around energy, territory, or travel/passage rights, but is handled by the government instead.
So yeah it's sort of space communism when you think about it, only this time it works because anybody can replicate a solid gold toilet if they want to, and nobody is starving...on earth at least
