We have freight railroads, not high speed rail. Add to it that railroad industry knows Americans generally don't give a shit about trains and there's no incentive. So instead of hauling people by the millions, we haul millions or tons for super cheap instead.

I like the train desu. By car, it takes me a 45 minutes to get to work (25km). Traffic drives me insane. Prefer to sit on the train and read for 45 minutes instead even though the routing is not efficient at all.

The largest problem with trains in America is city to city travel makes sense but once you get to a city your usually fucked as we don't have public transportation that works in most cities. So in order for interstate train travel to make sense we would have to build out mass transportation in all the cities to be connected by high speed rail. Then you run into the problem that we built our cities like sprawling messes with little to no forethought about mass transportation. So you have to spend a ton of money to retrofit cities and even then the new systems still won't well because our population densities are too low to support service levels that make cars less desirable.

1. Nobody's afraid of a high speed train.
2. Building a high speed train network in the US will cost shittons of money.
3. That money doesn't include what it would cost to recompense property owners for eminent domain purchases.
4. Leafs and Euros don't understand how big America is. Leafs never leave their province, and each province only has like 2 cities. All of Europe would fit in the glove box of an American car.

That said, I think a massive public infrastructure project like high speed rail would be a good idea in America. The government would own the rail lines and private companies would pay to access it.
I would also like to see a real monorail (MONORAIL!) project. This could run in tandem with existing highways and doesn't have to be high speed to service intra- and inter-city transportation where high speed rail doesn't make sense.
To pay for this, I suggest kicking out every illegal immigrant, stopping all legal immigration, and tarrifing the fuck out of non-Western countries. Make America Ride Trains Again!
