I've heard the real reason Trump's building this wall is to stop the unimaginable surge of immigrants entering through Mexico, coming from Europe, after Europe largely collapses economically and politically. This. And USA already survived a Civil War. Martial Law would prevent another. No external nation has the military might to match them. They could probably take on the whole world if they wanted to, they have a large agriculture and energy sector, more than enough to sustaine themselves. 1. Nowhere is it said that an Empire must conquer territory. The ancient Egyptians were not an expansionist empire, and Confucian empires were built on voluntary homage for the most part. Nor were all of Romes gains made by conquest - Empire is merely the imposition of rules from the 'center' of a civilisation to the 'periphery'.

2. Did it really though? The continued existence of a state is not 'survival', or else the Soviet empire is continued in Russia, the British empire remains strong and true, Rome is continued in a few states but for lols ill give Romania as an example. The US limping over the line to preside over, for example, a few centuries of inertia and decline is n survival at all.

3. It will survive external threats. There are thousands of reasons that states die and empires fall, and only one of those thousands is being dismantled after military defeat

And it's worse with the Navy, because all of that equipment requires intensive maintenance and strict adherence to schedule. They've still got a bit of runway left, but it's not much. Navy has some of the highest standards in all of the USA military when it comes to knowing how to do your job. Promotions are based on both skill, job knowledge, and fitness. Most of the other branches just focus on fitness and other stuff like college or other unrelated to the job stuff.

That's all officers. They aren't actually doing anything technical other than paperwork. The rare exception is the prior senior enlisted officer or Warrant Officer.

I thought it would balkanize at first, but now I realize that it's the best case scenario that will not happen, because there are no geographical differences. What will happen is what happened to France and Russian Empire. It will seize being an empire, but will become a terrible despotic regime hell bent on keeping the country together. What we have now will look better in retrospect. Probably communists will take over and start slaughtering and robbing everyone. After a while it will settle into something more acceptable, but it will suck.

No. When it takes a standard to advance, you have people in authority that actually know the job better than you. That is one of the good things about the US Navy and their Air Force, they are tested on the technical aspects of their jobs. This is not the case for their Army or Marines.
