i'm actually realizing it's more nuanced than what we usually think of as "identity politics". it's, first and foremost, about modifying behavior.
you can be as racist as you want, as long as you do not reveal or act on these biases in a way that strengthens your own connections. you can even call someone a nigger, they don't care. but what you absolutely cannot do is favor your own kind in any circumstance of consequence (housing, employment, admissions). even between small groups, there can be no intra-group acknowledgment of identity, because that increases cohesion.
