People in med school are reading tons of peer reviewed articles, are writing articles for peer reviewed journals, and actually understand the statistics in a way that the average person does not. How do you know it was the correct statistic test? How do you know the results stated by the authors are true from the data? Can you identify NNT or alpha/beta errors? Many approved articles for peer reviewed journals fail to be clinically significant despite the authors claim otherwise in the abstract and results sections (and this is usually all the general public reads). There is also the problem of mis-reporting by people who read these articles and post an article review in 'plain language' for the public, by writers who do not adequately analyze the data themselves. In med school, your doctors are taught how to do this because keeping up with literature is vitally important to their profession and they have to be able to sift through the bullshit to make clinical decisions.

It's not at all my starting point. But it's a fact of the matter. Teaching public risk is hard when people don't grasp what public risk is. The issue is I can't explain to people how measles may mutate and become a threat again when they don't even understand measles to begin with.
