I've never seen a more superficial materialistic culture than China today, and it's completely bizarre and counterintuitive.

Their cities are full of big empty poorly constructed buildings, cheaply and dangerously thrown up in a year to make their cities look more developed. Their roads are miserably planned, with horrible traffic order and blind turns across multi-lane roads with crashes nearly every day. I've seen people get knocked clean off motorcycles in the middle of Chinese roads and the sole reaction of other drivers was to drive around them.
The Chinese will bulldoze old streets with decades if not centuries of regional culture to build western-style strip malls full of luxury western brands that nobody goes to because everything is expensive other than on singles day, but have 15 people staffing them at any given time.
The people will wear their coats and jackets all the time, even in doors, even in hot weather, just to evidence that they own them.

Almost everything done by the people and the government and the people appears to either be a minimisation of flaws or a projection of success, even if there is none.
