as an actual farmer, I will chime in on this thread.
What you want is heirloom...not hybrid.
You are looking for "strongest"...not necessarily mixed crops. You can use distant cousins to produce a decent crop but those seeds from proven stock when well mixed within a given strong population is much more successful in the long term than a hodge podge of "experimental mixing".
Heirloom seeds out perform GMO and Hybrid stains 10 fold.A strong and small breeding stock is better than mixing shit willy nilly

Size and fruit production are all you care about in plants - no one cares about crops being long-lived. The crops themselves can he quite weak and sickly and require lots of human support - but the produced corn is healthy for people.
Imagine if humans were bred to have enormous sterile fetuses grow all over them, mature in a few months, and died at the end of each year. Imagine if humans were bred with apes to make hybrids.

They understood that bigger was not better, quality was everything
not surprised a German would get it, the best heirloom seeds from Europe come from Germany.
True what you are saying, hybrids are 9 out of 10 times freak show plants that don't have performance or yield nor viability when it comes to feeding people.
Heirloom seeds were at some time a hybrid experiment but with more sane ideas than simply "large produce".
The best strawberries are wild heirlooms, not commercial varieties that have a large size but a bland taste
