The biggest factor is the ease in raising a larger family.

In early America, land was very cheap, sometimes even free for settlers. You could build your own log cabin and trap or hunt for your food. Life was rough and hard scrabble to be sure, and your life expectancy was low, so it made sense to have many children, especially when there is no Social Security and the kindness of your children was your best insurance for old age.

In the 1940s, the middle class was very strong.
