i think his main problem is that the democrats will have learned about being scorned from last time after going with hillary. they will rally around whoever the nominee is in the hopes of defeating him
meanwhile his base should have doubts about his ability to lead. besides his witty tweets, he really hasnt delivered on his big campaign promises and is expanding executive power if he goes through with the emergency declaration. that will turn off traditional republicans who supported him in the first place in the hopes that he was going to downsize the government. in his defense he somewhat did that by nominating people who were pushing privatization but the government is still about as large as it was when he took office. regulations have been slashed and the economy is roaring which will look good but i dont think it will be enough

Trump was specifically chosen for the presidency to serve as a safety valve for white political discontent.
The underlying goal of his presidency is to stop the proverbial 'boiling frogs' (us white people) from leaping out of the pot before we meet our demographic demise. They want us to sit back, put our feet up and relax, and believe that we've won a major battle and upended the "swamp". When in reality, Trump is merely a continuation of the very same corrupt establishment that he vowed to dismantle and destroy.

Every election is different and this one is sure to be disgusting and insane but overall the increasing portion of the population that identifies as independent voters (now the largest block) being the portion that is souring him on him the most is concerning. His approval polling has barely budged with Dem and Rep voters but he is hemorrhaging independent support badly and got absolutely wiped out in independent heavy suburban districts in the midterms. I think his incessant craving for positive feedback is making him lean into his base way too fucking hard with policies that on the whole are very
unpopular - border wall shenanigans including the shut down and the national emergency, the tax plan, Muslim ban, overt nepotism and pay to play politics - all of it winners with his supporters but not of it has garnered positive polling numbers at any point and generally failed to serve as a shield for his party in the midterms. The Senate map was incredibly favorable to republicans last time but this next one will not be. Prison reform overall was a popular move (even if handled in a fucking stupid way via celebrity horse shit, but that is to be expected from Trump). Stuck in a precarious spot where it's do or die for him with the wall as far as his base but the mental gymnastics and appearance of aggressive power abuse required to sustain the methods push independents away and he seems to punt on meaningful policies that would garner broad support like infrastructure reform and trust busting because the Senate will not play ball. This is all ignoring his personality which is love or hate.
