A fusion reactor requires very strong magnets and high level math to contain what is essentially a constant series of fusion explosions.
People have been able to do it for years but i honestly doubt that one kid on his own sources the parts. Knows welding techniques needed. Knows the unbelievable math needed. Had parents that are willing for him to essentially create a bomb. Knows the electrical skill needed to not just create the magnets but keep them stable with redundancies.

You're talking about a tokamak, the fusor he built (by bolting together commercial parts, no welding) is nothing like that. It has *much* lower efficiency, and couldn't possibly produce net power no matter how far you scaled it up. They're mostly used as laboratory neutron sources.
