That's not what caused it. The inability of the US government to effectively manage inflation after going off the gold standard caused it. If wage increases are inflationary (and I'm not saying they are) then high taxes are deflationary. JFK even said that checking inflation was the point of the high taxes when they were instituted in WWII but went on to claim that they were no longer necessary when he argued in favor of tax cuts.
