Communism in a nutshell is essentially suicide, hence no country nor group of people can really implement it totally for they will also die in the process. my grandparents loved it , but not for the reasons you might think .
a communist society was made out of three types
1.party members
2.smart lower class
3.dumb lower class
i dont know much about the party members , though i know that they werent being punished for minor crimes (my grandpa was a cop)
but the lower class is where the interesting shit is. i will use my grandparents both from my mother's and my father's side . they both had same opportunities and equal wage , both worked crappy jobs , yet their financial difference was huge
grandparent's from my mother's side were into dark shit , meaning that they were part of the huge mechanism that was black market , about 50 percent of shit that was stored in their house was either bought from black market or was bought with money which they got from black market . using corruption they have managed to get a flat , 2 houses on the country side and the newest cars .
meanwhile father's parents werent capitalizing from the systems flaws and all they had was a flat and a car which was given by the state .
so basically there was a shadow capitalism in the most anti-capitalist country . people loved because they had an easy access to this and no one could stop it , cops werent giving a single shit about it ,you could bribe them with meat or sausages . that was the reason why USSR economy went to shit

I know people who lived in the ussr in the 70s and 80s and none of them told me about people they knew starving they tell me some type's of food were rarely In stock but there was always basic stuff available like bread and things like that. It's not that communism was good, it's just that the 'capitalism-on-steroids' that replaced it gave a select few corrupt politicians and businessmen/mafia bosses a huge pay-day at the expense of the general population. That resulted in the economy tanking, people loosing jobs etc. and a general feeling that the old days were the best days. In steps Putin, who fosters that idea because it helps to keep him in power, and suddenly people are calling out for the lesser of two evils.

If more time was spent on planning the economy and not opening it up to foreign investors too soon, it would have been more stable, and they'd all still hate commies. Still, the World Bank knows best, so better let them plan your transition to free market capitalism in 18 months...

Stalin was not a communist because communism is impossible. He's much better understood as a Russian head of state, like a Tsar, than a marxist. The ideology of who controls the world island is irrelevant. What matters is they control the world island. We stopped them from taking all of Germany, which means they were unable to outproduce us, and hence lost. Russia leans toward authoritarianism because their territory is vast and disconnected, which necessitates a strong head of state and enforcement, all the way back to the Tsar's Okhrana. Whether the strong leader is the tsar, stalin, or putin doesn't matter. This is why a western style democracy doesn't work over there.
