I listen to both, but I can tell you that some of these modern metal musicians are the most pretentious assholes ever to walk the earth. They are good, they are really fucking good, but they usually are just unaware of why not everyone wants to hear cookie monster vommiting in a cyberdemonic blender. Prog, Jazz, and fusion are where the real talent lies, in my opinion. The best of the best in metal are just as good, maybe in some ways better, but I'm not a big fan of the tone at this point.
All the nit picking faggotry aside though, I can get down to some metal.

Metal can be pretty good sometimes. I feel like if it goes one way too much it becomes comical and over the top (manowar) and if it goes too far the other way it becomes too dark(cradle of filth). Best metal IMO is thrash, shit like slayer, from the early 80s. By the 90s metal becomes increasingly boring.

Some metal is pretty cool but desu as much as I like the thrashy, deep guitar and bass in Death Metal I often hate when they use the growling lyrics that are unintelligible. Thank god for included lyrics, eh?

Right away, that opening guitar riff would sound at home as a saxophone riff on a jazz track.
And the guitar solo at 4:43, much like the majority of metal guitar solos are rooted in saxophone soloing.
Metal gets most of its structure from white jazz musicians.
Adding orchestral and symphonic elements to a song does not make it any closer to sounding like authentic classical music, if that were the case there's plenty of shitty hiphop and pop nigger trash with symphonic elements.
