If the sightings are real and the UFOs were indeed german craft you have to conclude they did not have the means (at least at the time) to mount a proper weapon on it, you could further speculate this to be due to the antigravitic nature of the craft. Perhaps having no relative mass also means shooting something pushes you away with an opposite force of the same magnitude, making it dangerous to use conventional armament.
Regardless, having a technological edge is never enough to win a war. Let me remind you the germans had god tier tanks, yet this didn't help them much on land.
