There is no general shortage of food in Venezuela but there is a shortage of certain staples such as butter, cooking oil, flour, rice and sugar and what these all have in common is that a corporation called Empresas Polar had a virtual monopoly on them (the CLAP programme is trying to change that). These items are being deliberately hoarded in hidden warehouses to ramp up the price and scarcity. These same capitalists are also fuelling inflation by smuggling currency out of the country into Colombia and elsewhere.

Add to that the international collapse in the price of oil and it's a huge economic strain.

The US govt has followed these sort of tactics for decades, ever since Kissinger held sway. Destroy the target country's economy; make the leaders unpopular and then hope for a coup (naturally offering US help to the opposition if they want it!)

Venezuela isn't fucked for 20 years.
Imeddiatly after Chavez was elected, he gone thru the classic resources excess all commie governments have, he seized several companies and started to distribute welfare backed by oil prices.
Meanwhile chavez was heavily subsidizing Cuba, while getting more and more radical commie, under Cuban influence. They basically seized all private property including farms and industries, with Venezuela gdp almost all composed by oil.
When oil prices dropped and Chavez died Venezuela was already pretty fucked. Since then, Venezuela tied itself with China and Russia, lending money to future oil. Money was basically used to keep power, spending almost all money on military and there wasn't any more money for people.
Government started to print money as a cheap solution, but this only lead to even worse recession, since no one will accept Venezuelan Bolivar, and with oil being the only real product tradable for products and dollar, things gone real bad.
The situation gone even worse when us stopped buying oil, and even Russia and China will not give any more money.

Can you take back Puerto Rico instead.
