You oughtn't be too surprised. Although German ancestry is the most common self-claimed ancestry among White Americans, DNA tests tend to find that on average they're more British/Irish. Go in any 23andme thread, and you'll find similar results where the majority of US flags are mainly British/Irish DNA.

I'm guessing that after the War of Independence, since British people were/are fairly villainised in US culture and media, many families would've downplayed their British roots, even those with Anglo surnames.

the 'german' midwest is still far more english if you look at the scale, which isn't a suprise considering the founding effect, the population that is there first typically contributes the most ancestry

Researching family history is easier said than done for colonials like Americans. What if you never knew one or both of your parents?

And they are accurate to some extent. I knew my mother was Irish, but I never knew the details about my South African Fathers ancestry, seeing as he was Cape Coloured. It estimated the Irish side pretty accurately, predicting that I was 51% Irish.

This is the main reason for it, but Americans tend to self report based on what they think their last name is or whatever a relative told them. This means you get a lot of pureblooded "german americans" who aren't actually very german.

I mean I already know my family history, and it seems pretty accurate.

Sure it's rare, but it certainly happens.More common in certain countries. I've met at least two people in my life who were adopted, and that's just the people who knew/told me about it.
